About Year 5

R.E Topic – Inspirational People

The children will learn about the qualities possessed by followers of Jesus through the theme of inspirational people. They will be introduced to inspirational followers of Jesus like Fr. Damien De Veuster and Josephine Bakhita and will be encouraged to reflect on how they can follow Jesus in their own lives.

During this topic children will:

• reflect on our commitment to following Jesus

• explore the story of a person who showed great love for others and a person who is an inspiration for young people

• identify people today who are an inspiration in their service of others

• reflect on how we can serve others at home, school, locally, globally

We enrich our curriculum by arranging the following educational visits:

Visits to Holy Apostles and Martyrs’ Parish Church E.g. Prayer Trail

Visits to the Floral Pavilion

A visit to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Swimming gala at Guinea Gap Leisure Centre

Sports competitions at local Schools

Reminders

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle to school every day.

Please label ALL clothing and belongings.

Physical Education (PE)

Our P.E day is Monday, please ensure your child has the appropriate kit on these days. All children should have a white t-shirt, black/navy shorts or skort and trainers. Black or navy leggings or jogging bottoms can be worn in the winter. For health and safety reasons, children cannot wear any jewellery for PE, so all children need to either be able to remove their earrings themselves or they should be removed in the morning before school.

Homework

English comprehension homework will be sent out on a Tuesday to be returned by the following Monday. English grammar and punctuation homework (if set) will be sent out on a Thursday to be returned by the following Wednesday. Maths homework will be sent out on a Friday to be returned by the following Thursday. It is used to consolidate your child’s learning from the previous week. Please allow and encourage your child to attempt their homework independently before supporting them if required.

Times Tables

Children are expected to know all of their tables up to 12 x 12 and associated division facts by the end of Year 4. Please ensure that the children keep their recall skills sharp. Use Times Tables Rockstars at home to support this.

Reading

The children are expected to read independently at home on a regular basis (at least 15 minutes per night). They should keep a record in their diary of what they have read, record this in their diary and ask you to initial it. Please listen to them read out loud once a week and record this in their diary. Discuss any vocabulary that they are not sure of.

Spellings

Children need to be able to read and spell all of the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 spellings. They also need to learn any spelling patterns and rules that are taught in class and then sent home. If you require another copy of the spelling lists please ask your class teacher.
