About Year 5

R.E Topic – Inspirational People

The children will learn about the qualities possessed by followers of Jesus through the theme of inspirational people. They will be introduced to inspirational followers of Jesus like Fr. Damien De Veuster and Josephine Bakhita and will be encouraged to reflect on how they can follow Jesus in their own lives.

During this topic children will:

• reflect on our commitment to following Jesus

• explore the story of a person who showed great love for others and a person who is an inspiration for young people

• identify people today who are an inspiration in their service of others

• reflect on how we can serve others at home, school, locally, globally

We enrich our curriculum by arranging the following educational visits:

Visits to Holy Apostles and Martyrs’ Parish Church E.g. Prayer Trail

Visits to the Floral Pavilion

A visit to the Manchester Imperial War Museum

A visit to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Swimming gala at Guinea Gap Leisure Centre

Sports competitions at local Schools

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle to school every day.

Please label ALL clothing and belongings.

Physical Education (PE)

Our P.E day is Wednesday, please ensure your child has the appropriate kit on these days. All children should have a white t-shirt, black/navy shorts and black pumps. For health and safety reasons, children cannot wear any jewellery for PE, so all children need to either be able to remove their earrings themselves or they should be removed in the morning before school.

Maths and English homework will be sent out on a Wednesday to be returned by the following Tuesday. It is used to consolidate your child’s learning from the previous week. Please allow and encourage your child to attempt their homework independently before supporting them if required.

Your child has been given homework on the online Mathletics platform. We have demonstrated how to get to the work in class, and have provided each child with login details. The login page can be accessed by following this link.

If the link does not work, please copy and paste the below website into your browser's address bar.

If your child has any problems accessing the website, please ask him/her to speak to their class teacher.

Times Tables

Children are expected to know all of their tables up to 12 x 12 and associated division facts by the end of Year 4. Please ensure that the children keep their recall skills sharp.

The children are expected to read independently at home on a regular basis (15 minutes per night). They should keep a record in their diary of what they have read. We appreciate that parents and carers are very busy, however when possible please support your child by listening to them read and discussing any vocabulary that they are not sure of.

Children need to be able to read and spell all of the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 spellings. They also need to learn any spelling patterns and rules that are taught in class and then sent home. If you require another copy of the spelling lists please ask your class teacher.

Parent/Carer Curriculum Information

Attached are overviews with more information about what your child will be learning in each curriculum area during each term. We cover a variety of exciting topics throughout the year and may ask your child to bring in items from home to support these.
