The Literacy Shed has a lot of excellent film clips, some that you may recognise already, and some that are designed specifically as a stimulus for writing. When you click onto the link it will take you to ‘The KS1 Shed’ and will list different genres. When you find a clip you like, there will be a list of suggested ideas for writing below it.

Below is the link to TWINKL writing resources so that you can choose which ones your child will enjoy doing, but I will also post links to some specific ones in case you would prefer it to be more targeted.

The children are expected to develop positive attitudes towards and stamina for writing by:

 - writing narratives about personal experiences and those of others (real and fictional)

- writing about real events

- writing poetry (we haven’t done much poetry yet)

- writing for different purposes


§ Consider what they are going to write before beginning by:

- planning or saying out loud what they are going to write about

- writing down ideas and/or key words, including new vocabulary

- encapsulating what they want to say, sentence by sentence


§ Make simple additions, revisions and corrections to their own writing by:

- evaluating their writing

- re-reading to check that their writing makes sense and that verbs to indicate time are used correctly and consistently

- proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation [for example, ends of sentences punctuated correctly

Classroom secrets

Over the next few weeks we would be covering the following activities in our Grammar lessons.

Some of these topics we revisit regularly to consolidate the children’s understanding.


 Apostrophes to mark where letters are missing in spelling and to mark singular possession in nouns [for example, the girl’s name] Click here


Learning how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including:  full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and question marks. Click here


 Use of –ly in Standard English to turn adjectives into adverbs. Click here



 Learn how to use the present and past tenses correctly and consistently including the progressive form.

In the next few weeks we will have been covering the following objectives:

Addition & Subtraction

Add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:

2 two-digit numbers

Show that addition of 2 numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of 1 number from another cannot

Recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems



Compare and sequence intervals of time

Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times

Know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day


Before Easter in Year 2 we would have been focussing on the following:

Describe/give reasons for what happens at the Offertory

Know and appreciate that at the Consecration the bread and wine are changed into Jesus.

Describe what happens during the Consecration

Give a reason why the Consecration is very important.

After Easter our topic will be Eastertide

Week 1

Know that Jesus rose from the dead and still lives with us. Ask and respond to questions about the imaginary experience of the seashore and Jesus’ appearance.

Week 2

Retell the story of Jesus’ appearance as he rose from the dead.

Week 3

Children to give ways in which the Holy Spirit helped the apostles and helps and guides us today.

Week 4

Ask and repond to questions about their experiences of bad and good news. How did they feel? Write and illustrate.

Week 5

Retell the story of the Ascension. Make links between the story of the Ascension and beliefs about the Holy Spirit.

Week 6

Retell the story of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Describe how the Holy Spirit helps them live their lives

Make links between behaviour and beliefs about the Holy Spirit

Times Tables


Children are expected to know all of their tables up to 12 x 12 and associated division facts by the end of Year 4. Please ensure that the children keep their recall skills sharp. Please click on the logo to access the website.

The children should be reading every day. We would recommend two sessions of around 10 minutes each. Please listen to them read out-loud as often as possible and discuss any vocabulary that they are not sure of.
