ELSA

Hello and welcome to our school's ELSA page!

What is ELSA?

Our highest priortity is to always ensure all our children feel safe and happy in school, as far as is possible. Unfortunately, we know that there will always be some children in our SSPP family who are facing challenges that can make it harder for them to engage effectively with learning. ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a program developed and supported by educational psychologists that recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

We are lucky enough to have two qualified Emotional Literacy Support Assistants at Ss Peter and Pauls - Mrs Patton and Miss Whyte. They work with some of our children who are experiencing temporary or longer term additional emotional needs. Sessions are fun, we use a range of activities such as: games, role-play or therapeutic activities such as mindfulness or arts and craft.

ELSA is designed to support a wide range of emotional needs:

  • Recognising emotions
  • Self-esteem
  • Social skills
  • Friendship skills
  • Anger management
  • Loss and bereavement

How does ELSA work?

Children are usually referred for ELSA support by their class teacher, or Mrs Davies, our SENDCO. We then plan a series of bespoke support sessions to support a child in developing new skills that allow them to manage their social and emotional needs more effectively.

Supporting - not fixing

Remember, ELSA is not here to fix children's problems. What we can do is provide emotional support. We aim to create a warm, respectful relationship with a child, and to provide a space where they are able to honestly and openly discuss their thoughts and feelings.
